THERE was a great shortage of hay I and straw in Somerset, and it was necessary for large purchases to be made from Wiltshire. Somerset farmers now required to take their own balers to Wiltshire to obtain the necessary straw. Mr. W. Middle, Bath, farmer, stated this before Mr. S. W. Nelson, Western Licensing Authority, at Bristol last week, when Mr, B. J. Sparkes, East Harptree. Somerset, sought a B licence for an articulated low-loading vehicle. The applicant wished to carry agricultural produce, feeding stuffs and machinery within the district bounded by Bristol, Salisbury, Chard and Taunton, and occasionally within 125 miles.
Mr. Sparkes said that the vehicle
could carry 300 bales of hay and straw, whereas an ordinary platform lorry could carry only 150. The objectors were British Railways, British Road Services and the Chard Transport Co., Ltd. After .hearing Mr. T. D. Corpe, for Mr. Sparkes, Mr. Nelson told the objectors that he felt that aprima facie case had been made out for the carriageof farm equipment. within 50 miles, and from sales at Cambridge and Reading, but not Chard and Axminster; also for agricultural produce and requisites within 50 miles, excluding to and from Avonmouth.
The objectors said that a licence On such terms would be satisfactory to them, and the Authority made his decision appropriately.
