AN offer by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders to hold a ballot to decide which manufacturers should supply vehicles for the final of the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition has been rejected. Members of the sub-committee of the national organizing committee decided in Coventry, on Monday, to make other arrangements to borrow vehicles.

After consultation with Mons. Francois de Saulieu, director-general of Les Routiers, and Mons. Gilbert Lesage, representative of Les Routiers • in Britain, the sub-committee agreed that four successful drivers in the All-England competition should compete in the international contest in Paris on September 22.

The four drivers will be accompanied by Cllr. K. Brain, chairman of the committee, Mr. M. J. Miles, organizing secretary, and Mr. G. .Aston, national clerk of the course, who will study the organization of an international competition in preparation for an event of this kind to be held in Britain in 1959.

To send the party to Paris will cost £250. British Road Services have subscribed £20 and Pease Transport, Ltd., £10. It was assumed that the total of £250 would be raised.

An eliminating round organized by Southend Sub-area of the Road Haulage Association has been tentatively fixed at Southend-on-Sea for June 30. This will be followed by contests in Birmingham on July 7, Coventry on July 14, and at Leeds, Oxford and Slough on July 21. No date has yet been arranged for the Portsmouth contest. The inclusion of Plymouth is still in doubt. Standard equipment will be used in all contests.

With one exception. all members of the sub-committee . agreed that an entrant should be allowed to compete in only . one eliminating contest.

Of the E.I entrance fee, 16s, will be retained by the local centre and 4s, will be sent to the national committee as a contribution towards the cost of the final, which will probably be held at Brameote on September 8.

Centres will be told that noncompliance with the national rules may jeopardize a driver's eligibility for the final competition.

Mr. G. Macaulay, controller of transport, Ministry of Works, will represent the national committee at the Southend, Birmingham, Coventry, Portsmouth, Slough and, possibly, Plymouth, contests. Mr. M. C. Hardaker will officiate at Leeds and Police Sergeant B. Hale at Oxford I.T.M.A. NOW
