Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Scottish drivers have lodged a claim for a 10% pay rise and a package of other benefits through the Transport and General Workers Union.

At last week's meeting of the Scottish Joint Industry Council their representative Jimmy Locke put forward four demands. In addition to the 10% increase in basic pay and allowances, they are seeking parity for sick pay with full pay once self-certified payment is added.

An extra £10 a week is being sought for drivers who gain specialist skills, such as certificates to carry hazardous chemicals. And they want employers to meet the full cost of employees' medical checks when renewing LGVs. Currently employers pay just under half the average £45 fee.

Scottish drivers are top of the UK league table for drivers' pay and employers are known to want to reduce their lead. However, the drivers' history of militancy may dissuade them for this year at least.

Once settled the 1994 pay deal will operate retrospectively from 1 April.
