Europe's van market, warns a study by the Economist magazine's Intelligence Unit.
By 1991 Japanese manufacturers will have a 15% share of the light commercial market in the European Community through production deals with European firms. In 1986 they had 10% of the under-twotonnes-GVW market and 12.1% of the two-3.5-tonnes sector. Only import barriers prevent the Japanese from capturing up to a 25% share, says the Economist.
Existing agreements between Japanese and European firms include: 0 Volkswagen — up to 15,000 Toyota one-tonne pickups a year to be produced at VW's Hanover.
0 Daimler-Benz — will build Mitsubishi's 2-2.5 tonne 1300 van in Spain.
0 Nissan — majority share in Motor Iberica's van production in Spain.
LI lsuzu — collaboration with GM in UK to produce Isuzu and Suzuki-based vans.
