• Four PSV operators' licences were suspended, 40 curtailed and 13 revoked during 1986-1987, according to the Annual Report of the Traffic Commissioners, published this week. Last year 15 PSV licences were curtailed in the Eastern Region — more than double the number curtailed in the next worst region, the North East. Just over 1,800 immediate and 1,535 deferred vehicle prohibitions were issued, and 671 PSV driving licences were refused, another 439 were suspended and 1,169 were revoked — mostly on medical grounds.
Most Commissioners reported increased holliganism and vandalism in their areas, and John Mervyn Pugh records that in the West Midlands even drivers' families were threatened.
Local "bus wars" led to a number of inter-company disputes which had to be adjudicated by the Commissioners, and typical passenger complains were summed up in the North Wester Traffic Area where the Commissioner reports public concern about the lack of a bus service in certain areas, buses using unsuitable routes, and buses being late or not arriving at all.
