Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The D2840L engine is one of the series of large-displacement diesel engines which are produced on a components-sharing basis between MAN and Daimler-Benz. Originally, components such as cylinder blocks, crankshafts and connecting rods were shared, but now the principal common component is the crankshaft. Both MAN and Mercedes-Benz produce veelOs in this common series, but the Mercedes engines (and the bulk of the MANs, for military use) are produced in naturallyaspirated form. The non-turbocharged MAN has an output of some 270KW.

The D2840L is a 90° water-cooled vee10, with one turbocharger per bank and a single air-water charge cooler mounted in front of the radiator in this 462 installation. Fitted to the 19.462, the massive output of this engine is transmitted by a single-plate Fichtel & Sachs MFZ 430 clutch through the biggest of ZF's Ecosplit gearboxes — the 16 S200 — to a singlereduction rear axle.

Impressive though this machine may appear on paper, it is not destined to make much of an impact on British haulage — at least in the foreseeable future. The British importer, MAN-VW, says that it does not see enough demand for the 19.462 to justify the sales and service support it would have to provide in this market.
