• I was horrified to read that motorway bandits have been hijacking trucks, along with their drivers (CM 17-23 March). I have been a driver for many years, and I have frequently carried high-value loads, without extra security.
If this sort of thing is going to continue, it is about time that employers took a responsible course of action and began advising drivers that their load could be a potential target for thieves. Far too few trucks have proper security systems on board. Surely the cost of an automatic radio alarm link to the depot is small compared to the amount of time and money lost when a truck is hijacked. It must be dirt cheap compared to the suffering a driver can endure at the hands of these thugs.
[noticed in your report that one of the drivers needed hospital treatment for shock and the other needed attention to bruising on his face. When you say they were bundled to the floor of their cabs during the hijacks, the thieves obviously stuck in a boot or two.
If Britain's lorry drivers do not start pushing for more protection and decent working conditions, attacks like this are going to get worse and worse. Clive Gornall Milngavie
