• Six of Britain's biggest independent bakers have formed a marketing consortium with a combined distribution fleet of 1,000 vehicles, covering most of England and Wales. Quality Bakers of Britain, aims to compete nationally with the two existing bakery giants, Allied and British Bakeries.
• Simon Engineering, the plant group which makes hydraulic tail and man lifts, recorded a £4.4 million tall in pretax profits last year, to 223.5 million.
• Rover Group, the stateowned motor giant which made pre-tax profits of over E27 million in 1987, is set to have past losses of £2.7 billion written off by the Government. The company, which has only been in the black once since 1978, faces takeover by British Aerospace. Some £8 million of its 1987 profits is from DAF, of which Rover owns 40%.
