HE TRANSPORT and General Yorkers Union is reviewing its prig-established opposition to igency drivers.
Local officers have been asked o report on the level of agreenents between agencies and the iniort, and the results of the surrey will be discussed by the pational committee of the paulage group next month.
Any change in policy would be ikely to strengthen the position if more reputable agencies, .uch as Overdrive, which claims o employ drivers in line with ocal haulage terms and condiions.
The review has been wompted by the issue of the levy hgv drivers' card. Drivers vithout the card are to be reused access to strong union preas such as docks. Agency Myers will not be allowed the lew card, despite the fact that nany are TGWU members.
The union's total opposition to pgency drivers goes back many rears. In the early 1970s there vas a campaign against the 'scab in the cab".
The TGWU could decide to re:ognise only one company, )verdrive. The union already re:ognises its parent, Manpower. or Overdrive, recognition vould be the first step towards reater acceptance in the imporant food, drink and tobacco sec
