Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SIR PETER THOMPSON is expected to relinquish his position as chief executive of the National Freight Consortium shortly, but will continue as chairman.

Jack Mather is expected to take over as chief executive. He is at present head of the crucial property division and took over the National Services Group when Brian Hayward resigned late last year.

In his role as chairman, Sir Peter would be able to concentrate on the broadest view of the NFC's future, for example its bid to merge with a privatised Sealink and float the NFC on the stock exchange.

Mr Mather has been with the NFC since 1967, when he was personnel director of British Road Services. He became managing director of Southern BRS, then Tankfreight, and managing director of the Special Traffic Group in 1976.

He is at present junior vicechairman of the Road Haulage Association. In normal succession, he would become senior vice-chairman in May and chairman two years later.
