NATIONAL BUS's plans to create a coachway using London's Marylebone railway station and its approach tunnels are achievable, but at a price, according to an independent report.
Coopers and Lybrand's study of rail-to-road conversions (see p14) on behalf of British Rail says that the Marylebone conversion (CM. January 28) sought by National Bus and made possible by BR's plan now going ahead to withdraw the rail services was found possible but at engineering costs put at £15m (f5m higher than NBC's estimate).
The possibility of using the latest double-deck coaches like MCW Metroliners is also doubted.
BR is making it clear that it wants to get the best possible price for the Marylebone station site and land and NBC could be asked to pay millions more in competition with property developers.
