14.5 per cent to £21m for 1983, and the National Freight Consortium has made a pre-tax trading profit of £6.3m for the first 12 weeks trading to December 24, 1983, representing a 43 per cent increase over the same period for 1982.
The TDG made its profit on a £367.6m turnover and made an operating profit of £26.3m. This compares favourably with 1982 results of £347.8m turnover and £23.6m operating profit.
Most profit was made in the second half of the year from July 1 to December 31, recording profits of £11.5m and £9.2m. The TOG said that general haulage fleets in the UK were busier than in the previous year and contract hire and specialised haulage had been highly successful. It added that progress had been made in the development of national parcels and express freight services.
A break-down of profits shows that the road haulage division made less profit than the storage division, despite road haulage's turnover being almost three times that of storage. Road haulage made a profit of £6.6m on a £119m turnover, compared with a £9m profit on a £41m turnover for storage.
The road haulage division's overseas section returned more favourable results, with a £6.4m profit on a £92m turnover. The storage division bettered these results again, with a 25 per cent profit from turnover, giving £2m profit on £8m turnover.
Geographically, the UK contributed almost 30 per cent to worldwide turnover and over 50 per cent to profits. Out of a total turnover of £367m, the UK contributed £224m, and of total profits of £26m, the UK contributed £17m.
Redundancy costs came to £570,000, loss on sale of properties came to £75,000 and closure costs came to £480,000.
NFC's trading profit at £6.3m is eight per cent ahead of last year's equivalent figure, demonstrating further growth of the business in real terms.
Profits from the disposal of surplus property were £0.3m, £1 .4m less than in the first quarter of last year.
