Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• At the first meeting of the Metrication Board's Steering Committee for distribution and consumer interests under the chairmanship of Mrs Ailsa Stanley, the extent to which metrication had already developed in retailing was reviewed. The Committee recognized the importance in the interest of the general public of co-ordinating further changes. It was felt that work would only be effective if it were matched by action by manufacturers and retailers and by the Government with their commitment to safeguard the interests of consumers in metrication changes.

Mrs Stanley said the committee would call on trade and other organizations to bring their expertise to bear in reaching sensible conclusions. With an adequate information and education effort it would be possible to overcome misgivings of the public about going metric. It was the purpose of the committee to ensure that metrication improved the quality of life.
