• Scammell Lorries Ltd this week announces its M range of automaticcoupling semi-trailers which have been built to metric standards as part of the company's policy of a programmed phasein to metric trailer units. Models are available plated for gross trailer weights of 12.5 tons or 14.5 tons.

The trailers are offered in lengths from 51 metres (20ft 6in.) to 11 metres (36ft I iltin,) in 1-metre (9fin.) increments up to 3 metres (26ft 3in.) and 1-metre (1ft Thin.) ;tens above that length, A 9-ton axle is used, set to provide a :amber of ldeg to match road camber. It s carried on semi-elliptic shackled-leaf ■ prings and uses twin 9.00-20 tyres on 36.5. eight-stud wheels. The 121-tonner uses 12-ply tyres, while the 141-tonner has 14-ply. A two-line air braking system operates 51in.-diameter 6in.-wide-wedge operated wo-leading shoe brakes through type 16rake chambers.

The trailer is based on a frame of 8in. by lin, rolled channel members, stiffened in he longer lengths with 3in. by 3in. by fin. Lngle reinforcement. Trailers longer than 9 netres have this angle suspended below the bottom flange to form a space frame.

Bolted-on outriggers and angle side sills provide the basis for a cross-boarded floor of 35mm (11in.) softwood boards, The 3in. by 2in. by 1in. angle sills are normally turned upwards, but downturned sills can be specified if required. Two widths are available, the standard being 2490mm (8ft 21n.), but to allow for the thickness of bodybuilding pillars on special bodywork such as van type an alternative width of 2420mrn (7ft lliin.) is offered. As a further option, the trailer can be supplied in chassis-only form at a reduced price.

An 800mm (2ft Thin.) headboard is a standard fitting, but a higher 1200mm (3ft 111in.), one is an alternative, or the trailer can be supplied without a headboard at all. Drop sides, 460mm (lft 6in.) high are another option.

The trailers are normally wired for 24V electrics, but a 12V system, which is more common on Continental tractors, can be specified without extra cost. The electrical connections for the lights are taken through a seven-pin flanged plug, but all trailers can be provided with six contacts adjacent to the coupling so that they can be inter changeable with the older type of autocoupling trailer on which the electrical connections were made automatically on coupling. Provision of these contacts costs £1 extra.

All trailers are supplied with a bracket to accept the detachable stop, tail, flasher lamp unit used on the tractor when running solo, but fixed units, together with the number plate, are available for an extra £12.

Recommended list prices of flat platform trailers, plated for 12.5 tons gross trailer weight complete with 800mm headboard and steel mudguards, range from £964 for a length of 61 metres, to £1145 for the longest, 11-metre, trailer. The 14.5-ton versions cost £15 more. In chassis only form, the equivalent price range is from £846 to £1008. A spare wheel, tyre and carrier add £60 or £64 according to tyre ply rating, The taller 1200mm headboard costs £15 extra, but the price is reduced by £35 if no headboard is required.

A load-sensing device can be fitted for £39, and rubber mudguards cost £11 more than the standard steel ones. For £16, the trailer can be equipped with a Hubodometer to record mileage.
