• Inaugurated last August, the RTITB/ DoE scheme for offering training awards to boys aged between 15 and 17 to enable them to take full-time instruction towards a career in vehicle maintenance has now been closed and the Board has assessed the preliminary results.
The scheme, it is said, can be claimed a very considerable success. A total of 875 awards were made and there has been no difficulty in finding employment for the award holders as their 24 weeks period of training has come to an end. Employers have readily accepted the trainees both for the on-the-job part of the programme and as permanent employees thereafter. Comments on the standard of efficiency achieved by this combination of integrated college training and full-time on-the-job training have, says RTITB, been universally favourable.
A similar scheme is currently in operation for the training of up to 1000 unemployed persons as heavy goods vehicle drivers. Training is given only where there is a known vacancy for a driver and where it has been confirmed that no existing qualified driver is available to fill the job.
