A, In 1956 the basic minimum remuneration
for a 44-hour week for the driver of a 5to 8-ton lorry was 154s. The following year this category was extended to 5 to 10 tons and the rate increased to 165s. The current RH (841 rate for the 5 to 10 ton category is 227s. 9d for a 41-hour week.
A direct comparison of excise duties is not strictly valid because of variations in average unladen weight over a 10-year period. But the weekly cost of licences in 1956 for a 7-tonner was 15s. 6d. compared with 31s. 6d. in the current edition of the COMMERCIAL MOTOR Tables of Operating Costs.
Comparable costs per gallon for diesel oil are: 1956, 3s. 9id. and 1967, 4s. 111d. assuming in both cases that the haulier purchases in bulk.
