Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Preston Corporation Transport Depart' ment was granted permission to increase its fares from July 1 by the North Western Traffic Commissioners in Preston last week.

The new fares will be 3d., 4d., 5d., 6d., 7d., 8d., 9c1., 10d. and lid., thus eliminating odd halfpennies. Children's and scholars' fares will now be calculated as half the adult single fare to the nearest penny, again avoiding halfpennies.

The general manager of the department, Mr. J. T. Langley, gave evidence that fares had not been increased since May 1965, and that a full year's revenue from the new rates was estimated to be £57,000. From April 1 1967 the total accumulated surplus after deducting deficits accrued in previous years would be only £3,160.

The department was always trying to economize, he said, and the coming year was to he no exception. One-man operated single-deck services were to be introduced in October and would be enlarged in July 1968.

The Commissioners also granted consequential applications tendered by Ribble Motor Services and joint operators to increase their fares within the city boundary.
