A DISCREPANCY between account I—I

ant's certified figures of earnings for 1960-61, and the total shown on schedules handed in to the Yorkshire Deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. J. H. E. Randolph, resulted in the adjournment of an application by E. Thorpe and Co.. Ltd.. Thurgoland, Sheffield, at Leeds last Friday.

Mr. D. Parnham, for Thorpe, said two vehicles (I41 tons) and one artic. (7+ tons) were sought on two separate A licences with normal user of steel and refractory materials, Yorkshire, Lancashire, South Wales, Midlands, Co. Durham, for the rigids; and with the addition of Staffordshire and Birmingham for the artic. Also, an additional B licence vehicle (2.1 tons) conditioned for iron and steel 40 miles, and plant and building materials. 25 miles. The existing fleet consisted of 13 vehicles, two on A licence, five on B and six on contract A.

After Mr. I. B. Thorpe, a director, referring to the figures, said there appeared to be an error in the addition of the totals, the accountant's figures being the correct ones, Mr. Randolph pointed out there was a discrepancy of nearly £1,000 and as it was admitted there had been wrong calculations, it was impossible to rely on any of the schedules.

Mr. G. P. Crowe, objecting for British Railways, said they regarded it as a case in which figures were extremely important, the documents produced were utterly worthless.

When Mr. Parnham asked for witnesses, who had come specially from Sheffield, to be heard, Mr. Crowe said that to take witnesses in isolation would he a waste of time. It might be necessary to recall them after proper figures had been produced and would put the case out of perspective—it was not the first time Thorpe's had produced unsatisfactory figures.

Adjourning the application, Mr. Randolph said properly certified documents must be produced at the next hearing.
