Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

An upward trend in . the number of summonses and convictions is apparent, mainly iri respect of drivers' hours and maintenance: There were 2,254 convictions for unlicensed operation; 1,483 for breach of conditions; 3,561 relating to hours; 8,003 relating to records; 2,873 for .construction and use offences; 80 for failure to display an identity certificate, 37 for using a prohibited vehicle;-and 940

for other offences. A total of 19,231 convictions, compared with 18,119 the previous year.

Of 87,825 vehicles examined, 29,691 were the subject of prohibition notices (7,839 of these being imitediate stops).

Of the 107 appeals lodged during the year or outstanding at the start of it, 26 were allowed by the Transport Tribunal, 30 disallowed, 13 abandoned and 38 were outstanding at the end of the year.

The Viva Shield, awarded annually for the greatest 'contribution to transport, was presented to the inventor of the Hovercraft, Mr.. J. E. Cockerel'.

U.S. ORDER FOR SIMMS IT was revealed yesterday by Mr. G. E.

• Liardet, chairman of the Sirnms group, that Simms Motor Units, Ltd., had been awarded a contract by the Ford Motor Co. of Detroit, U.S.A., for the supply of fuel-injection equipment for use on the six-cylindered engine of the new Ford 6000 tractor. Deliveries started late last year.

GOLDEN JUBILEE

THIS year is boiden Jubilee year for Stewart and Ardern, Ltd„ sole London distributors •of Morris cars and commercial vehicles. To mark the occasion a special photographic display of the company's 50 years' history is being presented at Stewart and Ardent showrooms.

The first of these was opened on Wednesday at the Berkeley Square showrooms in London's West End where the display included the first MorrisCommercial, a I-ton truck built in 1924, and three bulinose Morris cars, two 1913 models and a 1923 model.
