A Large number of West Cornwall members of the transport industry gathered at Camborne, last week, for the annual dinner of that sub-area of A.R.O., and Mr. J. R. Opie, chairman of the sub-area, found himself in the happy position of presiding over a record attendance. Among those present were Mr. R. W. Sewill, national director of A.R.O., Mr. K. G. Foster, chairman of the Devon and Cornwall Area Committee, and Mr. N. J. Bennett, area secretary. The sub-area had as its guests all the local railwaystation masters and representatives of each of the Chambers of Commerce in the vicinity.

Defence Plans Demand Better Roads.

With road problems of the present day as his subject, Mr. Malcolm Brereton, secretary of the B.R.F., spoke before the Royal Institute. of British Architects, last week, and made strong comment on the " shelving " of the Bressey Plan. Nevertheless, he was pleased to observe that Lord Chatfield, Minister of Defence, had said " the Minister of Transport has the need for improving the road exits from London actively in mind."

Peculiar respect, he said, was deserved by the County Surveyors' scheme for motorways.

A.R.O. Function in the West.
