Blackstone Concern Introduces Outfit Which Can Handle Liquids Containing Solid Matter APORTABLE pumping set built, primarily, for A.R.F. purposes, is being marketed by Blackstone and Co., Ltd., of Stamford, Lincs. Its purpose is the handling of liquids contaming solids which cannot be dealt with by ordinary water or fire pumps. The set consists of a Blackstone " unchokeable " pump coupled to a Lister petrol engine. It is mounted on a fabricated steel trailer, which can be manceuvred by one man and, when coupled up to a lorry or car, can be transported at high speed wherever it is needed.

At a time when many municipal authorities are brought face to face with heavy expenditure involved on plant for use in time of emergency, the Blackstone Utility Trailer Pump, as it is called, should prove a most attractive proposition, for it is economical both to buy and operate. It is. intended for such services as decontamination, fire-fighting, and for pumping out bomb craters.

Furthermore, it has the advantage that it can be used in peace time for such purposes as emptying cesspools, flooded cellars and waterlogged excavations, for process duties at sewage works, and for maintaining sewage services during a breakdown_

The power unit is a Lister fourcylindered air-cooled petrol engine. This type was selected as being particularly suited, to continuous running at high loads. The engine is enclosed in a special housing, and cooling is effected by a flywheel fan.

The trailer is fitted with quick-release jacks, which enable the plant to stand firm while in operation, and all the usual accessories—hose, spares, tools and towing ropes—are carried.

Outfits of two sizes are to be manufactured—one with an output of 250 g.p.m. to a total head of 50 ft., the other, a 4-in_ pump with an output of 350 g.p.m. to a 43-ft. head.
