BLOW TO TYNE TUNNEL PLAN.

THE Minister of Transport has informed South Shields Town Council and Tynemouth Town Council that he is of opinion that a site at the harbour mouth for a Tyne Tunnel is unsuitable and he cannot hold out any hope that a grant will be given from the Road Fund for such a tunnel.

South Shields Parliamentary Committee has decided not to drop its scheme and has asked all local organizations to pass resolutions, in favour of the local tunnel scheme, which will be sent to the Ministry of Labour.

Japan Extends Gas-vehicle Use.

I N Tokio, a meeting was recently held to discuss measures for extending the use, in Japan, of charcoal-gas producers. It is expected that about 5,000 lorries will be so equipped during the fiscal year 1939-40.

Pay-load, Not Unladen Weight.

IN dealing with the Chevrolet range of Imachines in our issue for last week, we referred to the respective unladen weights as being from 15 cwt. to 60-80 cwt. These figures, of course, refer to the pay-load capacity. A SUMMARY ON CLUTCH DESIGN

It is entitled "Some Aspects of Clutch Design," and contains useful plate-clutch formulx from which suitable particulars may be calculated for any given engine, whilst the various components of the leading makes of clutch are illustrated and discussed from both the point of view of design and materials.
