TRUCK DRIVERS have backed down from strike threats over wage cuts at Roadways Container Logistics (RCL) in Felixstowe, Southampton and Tilbury.

Members of trade union Unite were balloted on industrial action after RCL proposed a 9% wage drop for some drivers, as well as a reduction in holiday pay, from average pay to the guaranteed basic weekly rate (CM 10 June).

The 44 HGV drivers who staged a one-day strike at RCL in Southampton on 28 May had threatened to hold another walkout on Friday 18 June, However, Greg Vint, RCL general manager for Southampton, says: "I am happy to confirm that strike action had been called off."

A ballot for strikes for 10 drivers at Tilbury and 50 at Felixstowe was also rejected.

A Unite spokesman says: "The vote was not overwhelming, but our members have spoken in this region, and do not wish to strike," Meanwhile, Unite officer for RCL drivers at Tamworth, Peter Malbasa, says members have agreed to a six-week trial of new RCL

proposals. He would not divulge what the proposals were, but adds: "Our members agreed to trial proposals, without loss of pay or changes to terms and conditions
