RHA and FTA disappointed over delay to A14 widening inquiry

THE ROAD HAULAGE. Association (RHA) and the Freight Transport Association (ETA) have expressed their disappointment at the decision to postpone the planning inquiry into proposed widening and improvement work on the Al4 in Cambridgeshire.

The project is one of 11 the government has suspended pending an assessment of their financial viability in a spending review that will report in the autumn.

Jeff Howells, regional director for the RHA, says he understands the pressure the government is under, yet insists that the A14 scheme should remain a priority project.

"This is such an important road across the East of England, linking Birmingham to the coast and the ports. I really am disappointed." he says.

Howells says the RHA will make a strong case for the work to go ahead after the spending review, and also that the public inquiry should happen anyway.

He also says it is imperative some work is done now, even it the scope is limited by budget constraints: "If we continue to delay, the costs will continue to rise, We've just got to make the best of what we've got.

Meanwhile. Gordon Telling, ETA head of urban logistics policy, says other local development projects will continue to make the situation deteriorate. "There's Northstowe and work at Felixstowe. To say you're not going to do anything while the volume of traffic is increasing is just nonsense."

• Construction hauliers in the NorthEast will also have less work following I he decision to cancel construction of the AC North Tees and Hartlepool hospital.
