CBI joins fuel duty wagon after talking to protesters

THE CONFEDERATION of British Industry is joining the fight against rising fuel duty after meeting Welsh hauliers who took part in a peaceful protest earlier this month.
The employers' organisation, which has much closer links with government than the trade associations, has promised to highlight the severe impact the proposed 2p/lit increase could have on haulage.
David Rosser, director of the CBI in Wales, says it may also demand specific policy changes from the government: "I have asked the representatives to come back to us with facts and figures so we can see precisely what it is they are calling for and have a look at the soundness of their case." He adds that the plight of hauliers will probably be highlighted by Digby Jones, director general of the CBI. He has regular meet
ings with the Chancellor Gordon Brown as well as other government ministers.
Martin Palmer, leader of this month's demonstration that attracted over 200 trucks, says the CBI's support is a significant boost: "It was a constructive meeting and they showed us how to get the message across to the government."
However, he still plans to organise another peaceful protest towards the end of July.
