TEGISLATION to provide higher penalties for thefts from lorries was called for this week by Mr. Norman St. John-Stevas (Tory, Chelmsford). He was told by Mr. Dick Taverne, junior Home Office Minister, that the Home Secretary was considering the report on thefts and related offences by the Criminal Law Revision Committee, which had recommended increasing the maximum penalties for theft to 10 years and for robbery to life imprisonment.
