ommercial Motor understands that both MAN and Oaf have a clever, yet simple, device, which can quickly measure the curvature and the key dimensions of the nearside wide-angle mirror on a truck to show compliance with the new EU regs. To meet the new field of vision regs for nearside wideangle mirrors, they must typically have a radius of around 300mm.

Oaf Trucks' product marketing manager, Phil Moon, explains: "Daf dealers can supply this device, along with the replacement mirrors available for older vehicles, to bring them into line with the new EU directive, Through our TIRP all-makes parts operation, we'll also have mirrors to suit other makes, and there is a website www.checkyourmirror. com. where you can put in a chassis number and it will tell you if its mirrors need replacing. That covers a number of brands and allows an operator to quickly see which mirrors need replacement. We encourage the operator to take the whole head rather than the glass, since its going to be a lot easier to replace, not

least with regard to any electrical connections needed."

Moon adds: "I also understand that Vosa will use a similar device in order to check for compliance. I'm led to believe that its plans include a declaration form that can be completed by the mirror fitter, or dealer. to show that the mirrors meet the regulations. This form could then be presented at the annual test to show compliance." Either way, Moon says, operators should plan well ahead with regard to retrofitment. "Like Europe, a lot of vehicles will need replacement mirrors by the same date!"

The recommended fleet price for an unheated Dobli mirror kit is £110, heated mirror kits are £125. Prices for the camera monitor system kit with BE-302C flush-mounted, side-view camera start from £370 (based on a basic five-inch monitor).
