I am proposing the creation of an organisation along the lines of Fair Trials Abroad to deal with the transport industry.

To be called Fair Trials for Truckers (this is only a proposed name), it will be run by and for the transport industry. Whereas Fair Trials Abroad deals with any case, it is proposed that we only deal with drivers and their families. The following is for discussion: any and all views will be appreciated as I am putting this document out for feedback. FAIR TRIALS FOR TRUCKERS: (The following points are not in any order of importance) ) To be set up as a limited company with charitable status.

• i) Committee/board of directors made up of people with transport industry experience.

-) To monitor the welfare of drivers in foreign prisons, to pass news between the driver and their family (if and when possible).

0 To offer support to the families of drivers through a network of volunteers.

O To advise those families as to the best course of action and who to contact tie the Foreign Office, the British Consulate etc).

'D To lobby the government on driver issues, for example, drivers being held responsible for both the security of the load and the content of the load where as air, sea and rail are only responsible for the security of their loads and not the content.

i'") To lobby the government on the human rights of drivers held in prison without charge. 0 To also lobby the European government on the above two points.

0 To work with the authorities both at home and abroad to pass any and all information about the case to them. 0 To set up a hardship fund for those affected (if possible). ) To raise awareness within the industry of these and other issues.

0 To raise awareness outside of the industry of the above issues.

ir_) Any and all salaries in the future to run as stipendiary payment.

c) Co-ordinate and control any media material ensuring a single contact (with the agreement of those individuals concerned and on behalf of the organisation).
