• by Jennifer Ball Tim Andrews, the truck driver held hi a Greek prison after 14 Illegal immigrants were found on board his truck, could he released later this week at an Athens bail hearing.

Creek police stopped ex-para Tim Andrews last month at Patras port as he waited to hoard a ferry back to Italy (CM 17-23 July). His truck was searched and 14 illegal immigrants found on board behind his load of empty pallets.

He protested his innocence but later changed his plea after his Greek lawyer told him that if he pleaded gulity at the trial he would receive a smaller fine and probably be deported.

His wife Sue, who suffers with multiple sclerosis, is desperate to have him home: It's really difficult because I cannot work, so he is the only wage earner. We are all missing him, especially our grandson Rhys who is carrying a picture of his grandad around.

"I am really hoping to raise enough money to go out and visit him. We are holding a number of sponsored events such as a cricket match and car washing, which hopefully will help.

"I only get to have a few words with Tim each day but try to keep his spirits up. I know that conditions in the jail are poor, but Tim is saving us from worrying about him so won't tell us exactly how bad they are." She adds that the outcome of Wednesday's hail hearing is uncertain, as the bond may be prohibitively high.

Campaigner Ken Russell, a friend of the family, says support has been overwhelming: "We have received many letter and e-mails. More than 320 Royal Mail drivers from Peterborough have added their support and are now contacting other depots throughout the country.

"Tlm was just a normal guy doing a job to provide for his family. Hopefully, we will have him home where he belongs soon, then we can set about doing more to help ether truck drivers in foreign jails."

Local MP for Nottingham East. John Replied, is also now pursuing Tim's case.
