Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The race for number two position in the Transport and General Workers' Union (MG) has begun with two candidates at the starting blocks.

Graham Stevenson, national organiser for transport and Jack Drorrey, national organiser for services, are both bidding for the deputy general secretary position.

Stevenson is a close associate of incoming General Secretary Tony Woodley, who takes over from Bill Morris when he retires in October. Stevenson helped formulate Woodley's election manifesto and, like Woodley, rejects New Labour's partnership approach.

Dromey failed in his bid for the general secretary position, winning 45,000 votes to Woodley's 67,000. He says truck drivers should be recognised as 'knights of the road, with more pay and fewer working hours".

Stevenson's priorities are similar: "My main concern for truck drivers is to get the hours down and the pay up," he says. He wants drivers to earn 210 an hour. "Drivers are putting in the hours to get their pay up, which isn't safe," says Stevenson.

He wants driving to be made more attractive as a career, with an improved package to include pensions and training.

There will be a postal vote of the union's membership in September.
