Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A reliable transport infrastructure must be in place if the UK is to remain competitive and generate growth, says a new report from the Freight Transport Association.

The government should plan for road-user charging for all vehicles to balance traffic demand with roads supply; take control of road delivery by improving current, and supplying new, roads; invest in rail freight: deliver short-term solu tions including improved incident management and better driver information; and spend more of the £41bn generated by tax each year on improving and building new roads.

Currently, just 10p out of every 21 collected from road users in tax is spent on roads, says the PTA.

Industry investment in supply chains is a massive £850bn over the next 10 years—which is around five times greater than planned government spending, says the ETA.

"Some decisions about business location and supply chains are made on the back of whether government is going to supply a quality road network and not congested roads. Industry spends £5 for every £1 spent by the government and that £5 is dependent on that £1 being spent," says FTA external affairs director Geoff Dossetter.
