Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Illegal drivers are costing taxpayers an estimated £25 per vehicle per day, according to the results of a recent multi-agencies roadside check.

The latest results from last month's Operation Mermaid road check (CM 26 June-2 July) show that benefit fraudsters among the 5,940 checked trucks and vans were claiming at least :C150,000, according to Mermaid's police co-ordinator PC Bob Nockalls. The level of benefit fraud adds up to an average of £25 per van and truck per day. Applied across Britain's 400,0000 HGVs.

This could mean that illegal drivers are ripping off taxpayers to the tune of around ZlOm a day and keeping down other drivers' wages.

The last three national checks this year have exposed more £1,3m in a range of lost taxes and benefit fraud,
