Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"

ROAD transport has developed as the automatic choice for the movement of most freight, not only because it ts. by and large, the cheapest form of transport but because there is an air of personal service and individual Control surrounding every load sent by road. Thelorry, just as much as the private car. has an individuality, and the aim of the road haulage contractor, large or small. is to provide a personal service suited to the special needs of mandfacture.".

This view will be developed by Mr. T. G. !Gibb; vice-chairman and managing director of the B.R.S. Federation, at a conference on " Recent developments in transportation, storage and packaging which is being held by the Production Engineering Research Association. of Melton Mowbray. Leics. The conference will be at Melton Mowbray on September 22-24.

In hiS paper, on -road transport Mr. Gibb will stress that the constant availability and flexibility of road haulage has also had a forceful -bearing on the development of. the industry, for the knowledge that his goods can be collected and delivered almost on demand must weigh heavily with any manufacturer. Speed of service combined with safety is an essential factor in transport today and. with almost the whole of industrial Britain lying within the radius of one driying shift, full vehicle loads can be guaranteed a one-day or overnight delivery. Security of goods and freedom from damage are virtually ensured bv provision of what. is. to effect. a door-to• door service, without any handling of the loads in transit:" Other -speakers at -the conference will deal with the reduction of costs by better materials handling; stores procedure and organization;, air freighting and modern marketing: and the packaging of goods.
