THE somewhat more conciliatory attitude of leaders of the National Union of Railwaymen towards the problem of allowing access to private road hauliers at the proposed liner train depots received support from the union's annual conference just before it completed its deliberations at Paignton last week. Delegates endorsed the executive committee's decision to negotiate further and rejected an appeal by the Reading branch against the decision.
Mr. William Ballantine, N.U.R. assistant general secretary, told the conference that the Union favoured liner trains. He emphasized that there was nothing on four wheels which could compete with such trains manned by railway staff. He added that it was up to the Railways Board to go out and canvass for traffic.
