READING THE article on Bob Carmichael's Volvo FB88 in CM 10 January brought back some happy memories for me.
I was a young truck rental representative in the early 1970s working for Godfrey Davis in the West Midlands, where we had two FB88s on our Birmingham/Wolverhampton fleet.
I remember the regional manager telling me to take one out for a run one afternoon around Birmingham, to show the flag and drum up some business. I had driven lorries before but the FB88 was a totally new experience — and one I'll never forget. It was more comfortable than my company car! And the acceleration...
The 70s saw many improvements in LGV design and safety features. That brief drive that afternoon ushered-in a new era for me — no longer was the driver to be shaken to bits while flogging the engine to death to get the thing up to speed.
I would love to drive one again... does Bob need a part-timer? Harry Harris Dover, Kent
