CUMMINS IS TO re-enter the heavy-duty truck market. The Darlington-based company will launch the X-13 in September for Chinese truck manufacturer Dongfeng. It already has a 50/50 joint venture with Dongfeng making diesel engines.
The X-13 will also be available to European truck manufacturers. Steve Nendick, Cummins European communications director, says: The six-cylinder, fully electronic X-13 is expected to be ready for production in 2009, with power ranging from 400 to 545hp." The 13-litre engine will have Cummins XPI fuel system equipment (produced from a joint venture with Scania) to help meet Euro-4/5 emissions using SCR technology.
Since ERF products finished at Euro-3 the engine manufacturer hasn't had a western European truck to house a heavy-duty engine so it effectively withdrew from the market, although it still produces light-duty truck engines for Paccar, Avia, Dennis and Nissan.
