Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Noise and emission reduction are dominating refrigeration unit developments. Direct-drive units are seen by many as the answer for night-time deliveries because the noise and pollution from a second diesel engine is eliminated.

"Reliable compressors are the key," says Hubbard business development manager Fraser Hale. "The latest compressors are waterproof and so better able to cope in an inhospitable engine compartment."

Hubbard's alternator-driven HG range is a neat solution for t:ar-derived vans because there is no box on top of the vehicle.

The condenser on some lirect-drive units can be mounted without cutting into :he van roof, enhancing residual values. Eberspacher, which sells the Diavia Frigosoft Unit in the UK, says this is especially useful for operators fitting removable linings. Some direct-drive units do not require any cutting into the vehicle: Diavia's Frigos oft unit scroll compressors, introduced by Frigoblock and Thermo King, are also claimed to be quieter than traditional reciprocating compressors.

At next month's RAI Show Thermo King will be unveiling a more powerful yet more fitel-efficient version of its SL-series trailer units. It will also introduce the Spectrum, which replaces the SL-TCi multi-temperature range.

Both ranges have a new Poly-V belt drive which uses two fewer belts, reducing power loss. Tensioning is now automatic, eliminating any need for periodic adjustments, and belt-life is claimed to be clot: bled. The more efficient evaporator and condenser blowers improve tempera tore pull-down and recovery p, formance. Both units have t EMI (Extended Maintenan Interval) 3000 package as sta dard, doubling maintenan intervals to 3000 hours. The S iooe, SL-200e and SL-400e ha more powerful condenser at evaporator blowers to impro performance.

Pull-down and recovery faster, so the engine spends le time on high speed, improvir fuel economy, and temperatu fluctuations are minimised.

The new S-2 and 5-3 remo evaporators on the Spectrum a said to outperform the TCis co siderably. For example, the S-2 cooling capacity of 4,3ooW 20°C is 41% up on the TLE2; a flow is up 30% to 1,3 3orn3/11 the Spectrum's host unit ht 3,000W more capacity than tiSL-TCi with an air flow 5,00m3/hr.

Tarrier has been busy ion, beef; up the performance of its odma trailer refrigeration sysns. The Maxima too° is ;igned for full-size trailers, :II the Maxima 1200 aimed at urban-artic and drawbar mar:. There is also a multi-temperire model, the izooMt.

Airflow has been increased to oo and 4,6001113/h respecely, with capacities of 12.3kW d to.rkW at o°C.

Carrier's low-maintenance, ,ctric-drive Vector unit is prov3 popular with supermarkets: da and Tesco are the latest mpanies to order it.
