Swires' site

• Prestonbased haulier William Swires has had time restrictions imposed on an operating centre which has been used as a haulage base since the 1960s.

The move follows objections from Preston Borough Council and representations from two residents when Swires had tried to renew its licence. The company wanted authorisation for six vehicles and six trailers; an increase of four vehicles and five trailers.

The council said that a planning enforcement notice in February meant the site would be cut in size and there would not be enough room to park six vehicles and trailers. The access was not wide enough for heavy vehicles.

Residents complained that current restrictions on hours of operation were not being followed and they had been disturbed by vehicles and the use of floodlights at night.

For Swires, it was said that as many as 15 trucks had used the site in the past. There was also a business selling commercial vehicles in the yard which generated a lot of traffic, but would move if the application was granted.

North Western LA Martin Albu banned the starting and moving of unauthorised vehicles and the running of fridge equipment on Sundays, Saturday afternoons and weekdays between 20:00 and 07:00hrs.
