Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Foden and engine maker Caterpillar say that head gasket and cooling problems in 3306Bpowered vehicles have been cured with changes to the design and specification of certain parts.

A batch of 200 10-litre Caterpillar engines were also said to be affected by an early production-induced head gasket fault: the problems were caused by a "complex chain of events and circumstances", says Caterpillar. "Every one was given top attention by our engineers and Caterpillar has absorbed the cost of repairing engines with failed gaskets beyond the warranty applicable," the company adds.

Foden managing director Rod Heather says: "It has been apparent for some months that abnormally high head gasket failures were occurring in Cat 3306-powered Foden trucks. . it has regrettably taken a long time to develop recommendations to resolve this problem."

Heather "rejects totally" the suggestion by some customers that his company did not react quickly enough to the scale of the problem.
