• The French government is now' handing out heavier fines to traffic offenders in a campaign against speeding.

Truck and coach drivers can now be fined from 1,300 Francs to 2,500 Francs (around 2130-2250) for a speeding offence. Second offence fines soar from 2,500 Francs to 5,000 Francs (around 22504500).

The French police are warning that speed checks will be more frequent.

• The purchase of European Ferries by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) has been completed (Commercial Motor, December 13). P&O has acquired almost 79% of the shares in European Ferries.

Together the two companies now handle more than 50% of the freight traffic on both crossChannel and Irish Sea routes through their subsidiary companies Townsend Thoreson, Fen-ymasters and P&O Roadways.
