A NEW WAGES bargain between the Transport and General Workers' Union and representative Road Haulage Association employers in Devon and Cornwall was announced last week. According to carrying capacity of vehicle, drivers will now earn from £35 to £40 for a 40hour week. The new rates incorporate any "threshold" or cost of living payments at present being paid.

Subsistence allowances are increased to a minimum of £3.50 per night, and night work rates from 8pm to 6am will be paid at the rate of time and one-fifth. Any other working arrangements or interpretations of conditions will he by local employ er / employee negotiation.

It is expected that the new wage scales. taken in conjunction with other increasing costs, will require road haulage charges to be raised by at least 25 per cent.
