• Two-speed landing legs which are only £2 lOs dearer than single-speed models are now being introduced by Intertruck Ltd. Dewlands Industrial Estate, Dartford, Kent.
Reception by trailer makers has been so good, says the company, that 500 pairs have been scheduled for immediate produclion, with the designation Mark 6. Continental manufacturers are among those interested in the design.
The Intertruck Mark 6 is available with two types of gearing. One, which costs £31 10s, has two winding shafts on its gearbox, the winding handle being removed from one shaft and placed on the other to change operating speed. With this type there is no risk of incomplete engagement of gears —which there might be with the other Mark 6 leg, which has a simple push-pull control
to slide the low gearing in and out of mesh. This refinement costs an extra £3 but is particularly convenient where a large number of unit /trailer interchanges is involved; it gives a faster free extension (nearly +in. per term, compared with Ain. per term for the fixed two-speed model
lntertruck has made gear engagement as foolproof as possible by having a visible external register for the two gear-selector positions.
Both types have a lifting capacity of 22 tons on a pair of legs without the effort exceeding 100lb on a 12in winding handle. The big top nut for the jacking screw is fully floating so that it is unaffected by misalignment. The gearbox is packed with molybdenum disulphide grease and requires no lubrication in service, while all bearings are in nylon.
The legs themselves are of 8g box-section pressed steel capable of taking a static load of 36 tons, with a safety margin. A pair of legs weighs 2461b. Two leg lengths are available: one extending from 34in to 53in, the other from 30in to 45in. Double jockey wheels or swivelling flat feet can be specified.
