Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The 80 members of the Transport Association are being asked to complete a questionnaire, covering the first quarter of 1969, which will list the faults and maintenance problems encountered with their vehicles. The form covers the type and age of vehicles, number of days lost through mechanical trouble, mileage run and mpg. The "principal reasons for nonoperation" lists 11 items; engine, exhaust system, brakes, driving controls, transmission, steering and front axle, suspension, chassis, wheels and tyres, electrical, cab and bodywork.

TA chairman Mr. George Oustromoff said on Tuesday that the information would enable the association to pinpoint particular faults and, where design or quality shortcomings became evident, would put the TA in a strong position to make representations to the manufacturers.

Speaking at the luncheon following the Tuesday committee meeting, Mr. A. Alman, deputy editor of Motor Transport, deplored the lack of viable national wages machinery, which had laid operators open to guerrilla tactics. In its absence there would soon be another round of demands and in due course a third.
