• Under new arrangements which came into operation on January 21, containers approved by design type (under the ,type approval scheme) for the carriage of goods under Customs seal on international journeys must each bear a plate giving the type approval number. But containers which are plated in this way will not need individual certificates of approval, nor will they have to be inspected and re-approved every two years.
These new procedures, announced by HM Customs and Excise, and thu Ministry of Transport, follow UK acceptance of resolutions Hand 26 adopted by the Economic Commission for Europe.
Further information about these requirements, together with details of the metal plate to be used, are given in a revised
explanatory memorandum (RTG /FIR Copies of this and of the application form for type approval (GV65) can be obtained from any traffic area office of the Ministry of Transport.
While the new procedure supersedes the type approval scheme for containers which was introduced in this country on October 1 last year, existing arrangements for type approval of vehicles and for the individual approval of vehicles and containers which do not form part of a production series, remain unchanged: Containers which have already been type-approved and issued with certificates under the earlier procedure may have metal plates fixed to them by the manufacturer so long as the manufacturer is satisfied that they still comply with the approved design in all respects.
The type approval scheme for vehicles and containers, introduced last October, referred to units manufactured to identical specifications as part of a production series.
