• Following rejection by Transport and General Workers Union members of a 6d an hour pay rise, the Leeds and District Hauliers Federation agreed last week at a special meeting that no further offer could be made. Members agreed that the union should be advised that this was the situation; in view of the state of the industry in the Leeds area
no further increase could be met by individual firms without a substantial increase in rates, while the industry as a whole was already faced with a considerable extra cost burdens stemming largely from government legislation.
A member of the Federation told CM that he felt the whole matter should have been dealt with nationally by the Wages Council, but apparently the union would not hear of this.
