• A Scottish truck driver who died after losing control of his tanker on a sharp bend in a Highland village had traces of cannabis in his system.
Last week an inquiry into the death of Roy Farquhar heard that he was thrown from his cab after crashing on the A9 Inverness-Wick road at 01:00hrs on 4 November last year.
It heard that the safe speed for the corner in question was 30mph but an examination of the relevant tachograph chart revealed the liquid tar tanker had been doing 55mph right up to the point where Farquhar lost control.
The inquiry at Dornoch Sheriff's Court heard that a subsequent post mortem revealed traces of cannabis although it was unclear how much of the drug had been taken, and when.
It also heard that Farquhar. from Easter Ross, had only resumed driving four weeks before the crash after having his HGV licence suspended following brain surgery.
The court determined that Farquhar, who was not wearing a seat-belt, died as a result of excessive speed.
