The tyre, of the dual-purpose wheel is specially constructed for use on the steel rails and is said to remain cool, even at high speeds, owing to the flat nature of the side walls-a type of construction which prevents the development of heat and reduces the stress on the fabric. Forming an integral part of-_the coach wheel is an aluminiumalloy safety ring which extends deep down tVithin the centre of the, tyre itself.

If the tyre becomes punctured the aluminium safety ring sinks-onlyin. without any jar, and the coach wheel then continues to .turn without serious damage to the tyre, the safety ring resting on the specially designed hardrubber tread.

This coach was designed for use mainly on the rails of abandoned branch lines, isolated settlements being reached by road. The cost of such a vehicle compares favourably with that. of a normal bus.
