Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Easy and Convenient Operalion Ensured by the Parkes Device SEVERAL useful features are embodied in the patented destinationindicator gear made by Samuel Parkes and Co., Ltd., Pretoria Works, Will, enhall, which specializes in the manufacture of various types of bodywork fitting.

The gear provides for the easy adjustment of the distance between the rollers, it can be fitted for operation from either the right-hand or left-hand side of the box, and the handle can be attached in any convenient position.

Bus proprietors will be well aware of the difficulty sometimes experienced hi locating a suitable position for the handle of the destination-indicator gear. This is, however, overcome by the use of the Parkes patented device, which permits easy operation from the driver's cab.

As will be seen from the accompanying sketch, the handle is mounted on a

spindle, which, at the other end, is carried in a vertically 'pivoting bracket, permitting the spindle to be located ha any position within an angle of 180 degrees. This spindle is equipped with a bevel wheel which meshes with another bevel mounted on a horizontal member attached to the swivelling bracket and carrying the sprockets for the chains driving the split-metal rollers.

A laterally sliding dog engages with either of the sprockets, according to the direction in which the handle is rotated and, in this way, provision is made for reversing the blind.

In the sketch, we indicate, by means of broken lines, the position of an alternative handle for operation from the side. In special cases, the swivelling gear can be placed on the outside and the spindle can then be situated at any point within an angle of 300 degrees.

The distance between the rollers is variable by removing four fixing screws from each box attachment and raising or lowering the upper roller, altering the length of the appropriate chain. It is also quite easy to transfer the mechanism from one side of the box to the other.
