THE EFFECTS of heavy vehicles on bridges will soon be gauged more accurately, when the Department of the Environment produces its Code of Assessment for Highway Bridges and Structures next year.
The Code will apply for short span bridges only (a Code on long-span bridges is expected within two years) and will give county councils precise information on how to examine and correctly gauge damage caused by heavy weights.
The Code is the result of much consultation between county councils and various trade associations, a DoE spokesman told
CM.
