THE GOVERNMENT has agreed programme to develop the new ge Transport Minister Lynda Chalker told MPs last week that the Departments of Transport and Trade arid Industry had agreed on a four-year programme of research with the vehicle and component industries for the QHV 90 project.

Several major contracts are now being negotiated for the development and building of preproduction prototypes of engines, exhausts and other components as well as complete vehicles.

These are understood to include likely deals with Ford, Leyland, Bedford, Cummins, RollsRoyce and Perkins.

"This will put the United Kingdom industry in a good position to provide the full range of new equipment that will be needed to meet the much stiffer noise limits proposed recently by the commission of the European communities to come into effect later this decade," said Mrs Chalker.

The QHV 90 project is aimed at producing lorry noise levels in 1990 that will be as low as most 1981 new cars.

They expect to build proto to contribute half of the £10m neration of quiet lorries.
